To set up an algebraic equation, you would write

n/2 = n/6 + 3

then find a Lowest Common Denominator

3n/6 = n/6 + 3

subtract n/6 from both sides

2n/6 = 3

multiply both sides by 6/2

n = 9

and you're done!

The number is 6.
Half of it would be 3, and certainly 6 is greater than 1/6th of its own value (which is 1)

Ok, sorry nevermind/disregard.  The question be read in 2 ways, but without punctuation, it was hard to interpret the meaning of the question.

The actual answer is 9.  4.5 is half of that number--- which is 3 more than 1/6 of 9 (1.5)
