7n - 2(n + 5) < 3n -16    (your problem statement) 7n - 2n - 10 < 3n - 16    (eliminate parentheses using the distributive property) 5n - 10 < 3n - 16    (collect terms) 2n - 10 < -16    (subtract 3n) 2n < -6    (add 10) n < -3    (divide by 2)
Inequalities are solved in exactly the same way as equations, with one exception. Multiplication or division by a negative number reverses the sense of the inequality. Example   -n > 2   n < -2  Note that in your problem we divided by +2, so the sense of the inequality was not changed.
