The number which does the division is known as the divisor. A dividend is divided by the divisor. Divisor is also known as a factor in mathematics. It refers to an integer which divides another integer evenly and leaves no remainders. A divisor and a dividend should be units of the same kind for instance yards from yards, hours by hours, dollars by dollars etc. Seven is a divisor of 42. Here 42 is the dividend.

A divisor and a dividend are given to find out how many times the divisor is contained in the dividend. The number of times is called a quotient. There are different types of divisors. It is mathematical term referring to a quantity used to compute an index. It is used a lot in stock indices. It is adjusted for stock splits or additional issues of stocks. Divisors can be positive or negative.
