The history and social science standards of learning (SOL) tests can be a basis for holding a student back in a grade in a public or private school. These tests require a higher level of knowledge and requires them to compare information and make decisions based on that information and to analyze and interpret information.

In order to make sure your student can pass this test and move on successfully to the next grade level there are several study methods that have proven successful in the past.

  • Using flash cards to memorize historic dates
  • Using one of the many practice tests on the internet for free
  • Working on improving reading comprehension skills

These tests can vary from state to state so it's very important to get with your child's teacher and find out what the standards are and also to get any study material that they may have for you. Get started on the material as soon as you get it and help your child study and monitor their progress closely.

A student that excels on an SOL test can be expected to be college ready in the subjects of social studies and history, subjects that they will encounter within their first two years of college. There are other standards of learning tests in other subjects that students may have to pass in order to pass on to the next grade level in that subject. Once again, this varies from state to state and the policies on passing the test may vary as well, so find out what the rules and regulations are where you reside.

Passing an SOL test can make a difference in your child's education, so find out all of the information that you need to know as quickly as you can to help your child be successful in school.
