I believe university today is just another stepping sone in education. Grade school, middle, High school and university. I feel a good percentage do not belong in university but should be in manual skills and other fields of employment not requiring a diploma. Years ago a bachelors was a great achievement, then Masters and now Phd. I just heard on the TV yesterday morning that a great percentage of students cannot pass the entrance exams in certain subjects, some in many. Many colleges here are allowing undergrads to complete one year, then telling them don't return next year. I feel the least a person can do is have some idea of their goal in life, if not, don't forestall your lives and get on with things by seeking employment. All of life does not require a sheepskin to provide a good quality of life. Also, nowhere in the word college is the word party incorporated. For some it's just one big social affair.
In my opinion (I am 15 years old and going to be 16 soon so don't take my answer over seriously) going to university is just putting you into money problems straight away and then you have to pay it off like once you earn so much money! And in the UK you have to be earning £15,000 to be able to start paying it off, and plus there is other things such as the property ladder and starting a family, so being in money problems straight away is a pain. Plus there is the possibility of getting a job and just going up the rankings, which in the end it is the easier way round it.
It depends on what you are going to do with your education. Getting a degree in modern times has become extremely expensive and time consuming. Truthfully unless you are going to be a doctor, a lawyer, or a researcher or something, going to a university is a waste of money. You would make much more in the long run sticking with jobs where no degree is required and not having to pay back student loans than you would be to borrow tens of thousands of dollars just to get a degree that millions of other people have.
Depending on what career you are planning to do then yes. If you are going into any profession such as Medicine, Law, Banking then it will be essential.
G'day Shujing,
Thank you for your question.
It is important that people complete either a university degree or training these days. Of course, there are always people like Bill Gates who will thrive without it.

Very much so, but it should also be just as important for the community and country to support going to university the best they possibly can for their citizenry
It depends entirely on what your goal is. In the past a higher education was just that - an education, not a job requirement.
In today's world, with the competition for the best pay so strong, the jobs go to the highest educated person.
As mentioned above, the people who really have the most money are the ones who are self-motivated to invent entirely new ways to provide service to the most people. However, for every successful entrepreneur there are thousands, if not millions, who stay poor chasing rainbows.
My 30 year old son is an example of that. He is very intelligent and was told by everyone he could be anything he wants. However, he skipped over the "if you work at it" part. Now he just sits around playing computer games and waits for something great to happen to him.

In some of the more lucrative professional careers it is not a question of if you should have a higher education. You simply must have a higher education. A high school education is an absolute bare minimum required to be able to support yourself. I can tell you that in my city a requirement for being a garbage collector is a high school diploma. My son-in-law graduated high school and then went to a trade school for a little over one year. He makes a very good living but it is hard manual work. So, it is not necessary to have a college degree, but it certainly makes life a little easier and offers more perks if you do.
Tuition: $25,000.
Room and board: $25,000.
Credit card debt: $25,000.
Highest salary you can expect after graduation: $8/hour.
Living in abject poverty for the rest of your life because you spent $75,000 and 4 years of your life on a lousy piece of wallpaper: You guessed it . . . WORTHLESS!
How's that for an answer?

No
I believe it is important for a well-rounded personality, but I notice that many bright kids are now going straight into professions as juniors, studying directly for their careers. That way they earn a wage and do not accumulate college debt.
Yes, if nothing else it shows you have commitment and discipline, also, with the advanced technology of today, academic learning is necessary
Yes it is. You will NOT get a job otherwise. No university, no job. Simple as that.
It depends on what do you want to do in your life or if you have any ambitions. But generally there are a lot of advantages going to university. You will have a lot more choices in controlling your future. For example, if you go for a job, you will be more competitive than others, the employer will receive so many CVs, when they look through all the CVs and the ones without degrees are often the first to be eliminated. There are some top business people have never been to university or quit halfway, like Bill Gate, but these people are very few compare to the majority business popultation, they are very fortunate in some ways as well, made the right decision at the right time. Most people struggle for years until they get what they want. Especially if you are not doing your own business, it takes a lot longer and a lot harder for people don't have degrees to get where they want in companies. Also when go to university, you will make a lot of friends, you are forming a relationship circle which will be very important for the future. If you are not sure what you want to do, you can try out, because you can change different courses in Uni, so one day you will find something interesting to study. So get yourself a good degree then you can look around pick up what you like to do.
