How many of us know that there are indeed words in the English language that can be more than forty four letters long?! The longest known word that can be used commonly is 'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis' This word refers to a type of lung disease, which can be caused when a person breathes in small particles of volcanic dust from the atmosphere.

It is often said that this strange word was coined by its creator Everett Smith in the year 1935, simply for the purpose of coining the longest word in the English language at the time. Even today, this remains the longest word, followed closely by the word 'Hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomies' meaning a surgical connection made artificially from the gall bladder and the hepatic duct, to the intestine. The third longest word known today is the 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious', a word coined as the song title for the movie 'Mary Poppins' by Walt Disney.

The longest word in any English dictionary is

PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOLCANOCONIOSIS

at 45 letters. This apparently refers to a disease of the lungs contracted through breathing in silica dust from volcanoes. This disease does exist, but is usually called pneumoconiosis. The other word was deliberately coined i a effort to produce the longest word in English. There are a few other words nearly as long as this, but they are all medical terms and known only to specialists.

The longest word in (relatively) general use is still

ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM.

This word was coined in the 19th century. It means opposition to disestablishment (the separation of church and state.) A disestablishmentarianist supports this separation, whereas an antidisestablishmentarianist is against it.
