In order to make a percentage a fraction, the first thing you have to do is turn it into a decimal.

To make a percentage a decimal, move the decimal point 2 places to the left.

  • 12.5% --> 0.125.
After coming up with 0.125, now you want to make that a fraction (out of 1). To make it easier, say the decimal out loud (one hundred twenty-five thousandths). This is really like saying "one hundred twenty-five over one thousand". That will be your fraction.
So, when changing it to a fraction, you will get 125/1000. However, this needs to be simplified. Divide the numerator and denominator by 125 (this is the greatest common factor for both numbers) and your final answer is 1/8.
