It's very quick and easy to learn, there's only two things you need to remember.
When you're tallying, you would use a " | " for every one. However, every fifth tally mark, you would use a " / " (slash mark) and draw that through the four " | " marks.
Example: Tally the number three.

Tally the number five.
|||| with a / going through the |||| (due to formatting I can't put it up correctly on here).
Tally the number eight.
|||| with a / going through it, and then ||| after that.
