You must know that a noun is a name of a person, place or thing. A compound noun is made up of two words rather than one. It is mostly a noun that is modified by another noun adjective or verb. For instance, the word 'tooth' is a noun and so is the word 'paste', both of them are combined to make the noun 'tooth-paste'. Similarly the nouns 'black' and 'board' together make up the compound noun ' blackboard'. Some other examples of coumpund nouns are:
pen+knife-->penknife
broom+stick--->broomstick
match+stick--->matchstick
face+wash----->facewash
In all the above examples, the first word describes the second, telling us what it looks like or what it's function is. Compound nouns can be formed by combining a preposition and noun:
under+ground--->underground.
or a verb and noun:
Swimming+pool--->Swimming pool
In some cases compound nouns may be formed by combining a preposition and verb and no noun. E.g:
Out+put--->Output
Sometimes by combining an adjective and verb. E.g:
Dry+cleaning--->Dry_cleaning.
Hope this helps. Have fun!:)
