What does the ancient Goddess Amaterasu and the WW2 Battle flag of Japan have in common and why?

Goddess Amaterasu was the Sun goddess, as Tyto mentioned. Amaterasu was a major character in religion and mythology, so it's no surprise that the battle flag (A variant of the current Hinomaru or Nisshoki, which both kinda mean 'rising sun' to an extent) also depicted the Sun for the sake of... Symbolism? (Japan/Nippon is/means "the land of the rising sun") That's basically all I know.

Makes it seem like a lot of things in the past could very well have been avoided if people bothered to study :P

I hear that! I had two Japanese in my unit in Nam and learned so much from them. One even gave me a 350 year old Katana and Wakasashi for saving his life.
