Good question ! One I wonder about quite a bit. Maybe us older people grew up in a different world where respect and manners meant something. Not all young ones are like that as I have met many great kids but it seems that a lot of parents just don't spend the time with their kids to teach them these things. It's a shame really and it angers me but all I can do is hope for the best for the young ones.
Us elders have been through a lot and deserve respect but some people don't even know the meaning of the word.
