There have been so many giants it's hard to choose just one.
It's tempting to opt for Charles Darwin whose original thought did much to free us from our dependence on superstition, but how could you put Darwin ahead of, say, Newton or Galileo or Louis Pasteur?
History is filled with great men and women but you're not asking about greatness, but about "favourites". That said, had I the opportunity, I'd like to spend an afternoon in the desert with Omar Khayyam -- philosopher, astronomer, mathematician, poet, bon vivant. I would love to sit at his feet and just listen to whatever he had to tell me. He was the embodiment of Wisdom.
Fortunately, the printing press has made it possible for me to hear his words which, of course, brings us to another of history's greats: the man who invented the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg ... although even he was perhaps borrowing ideas from China's Bi Sheng.
