Dear Hello There,

For problem 7, I believe that x = -11

However, the notation to me seems not really clear; do you think that in this problem, that QR = x + 18 ?

If so, then you start by just writing down everything you know:

PS = PQ + QR + RS, and QR = x + 18

PS = PQ + (x+18) + RS; also, from what you are given, you know that

PS = x + 39; also you are given that

PR = 18

QS = 17. And we can see that,

PS = PR + QS - QR, and now you can begin to substitute:

PS = 18 + 17 - (x + 18) = 18 + 17 - x - 18 = 17 - x. Then,

x + PS = 17; but we know that PS = x + 39, so

x + (x + 39) = 17, and then

2x + 39 = 17, and then 2x = -22 which means

x = -11
