Reading, writing, and mathematics are the basics.  Then you build onto that with History, Languages, Arts, Sciences and Literature.  To be a good teacher, you will need to also learn child psychology, public speaking, and logic.   There are so many courses that apply, and it is a lifelong effort to become the best you can be.  Many of the courses offered in college are geared specifically for becoming a teacher.  You can contact a guidance counselor at the college of your choice and they will be pleased to send you some information.  Something else to look into is What are the requirements of the school where you want to teach?  Each state has slightly different requirements and may require you to pass a state exam in addition to holding a degree or certification.  In other countries the requirements may be very different. Also, it will be different depending on whether it is a publicly funded school or a private academy.

There are lots of routes into teaching.  I'm just about to exit from the raf and went down the Flexible route.  I got a open university degree (any for primary got to be subject specific for secondary) and then as I needed an income went to the uni of hertfordshire on their flexible programme (PGCE).  This fitted in with service life as I studied online and organised school visits (for the tasks) in my own time.  There was a five week and a nine week block which needed to be spent (and passed) in a primary school and eventually when youve jumped through lots of hoops (skills test etc) the course gives you QTS.
Do you have a degree? If you do you might find the PGCE 1 year course I for you.  If you need an income then the GTP (graduate teacher programme) might be for you where you work in a school for a year getting 15000 or so while you teach/study.  The flexi route fits in alongside your work (the way I went) or if you don't have a degree yet  you can take a uni course for 3 years which gives you a degree at the end with QTS.
Either way at the end you will have a degree!  I think you also need a minimum of 3 GCSEs (maths, english and a science) but I'm not too sure on this one.
Hopefully this gives you an insight but you can find more details on the TDA website.  Regards

Well I only know one that you should take but not all schools do it. Thats childcare and if your school do the babysitting it could all become useful.
