In every organization, there is a hierarchy or levels of positions that determine how an individual will progress to the next level. It is generally assumed and stressed that this progression to subsequent levels does and should take place according to the employee’s performance. This is not always the case and at times what happens is that people who are qualified and deserving to be promoted are not done so because of certain non job related factors. It is like a form of discrimination. Some of the reasons of this professional discrimination are sex (women not being promoted to higher posts), disability, aged people or racial discrimination. This hindrance in career progression because of non job related factors is called glass ceiling.
