During the slave trade, the countries in Africa had different names and different borders. Keep this in mind when tracing the origin of African slaves in Virginia. Western African countries were the most common locations for slave-traders to go. This is because it is closer to the United States. Many of the intended slaves ended up in the Caribbean. Slave traders who dealt in Asia and Europe often went to Eastern Africa. The majority of African slaves in Virginia came from Mozambique. This is a country in South-eastern Africa, and is a former Portuguese colony. Nigeria had the next highest amount of slaves brought to Virginia. This is a fairly-large country is located in Western Africa, and British used to control it. Sierra Leone had the third highest amount of slaves. It is located in Western Africa, and was a British colony at the time of the slave trade.

The prevalence of slaves from the Gold Coast was the next highest. This is technically a region of Africa, not a country. Ghana is the name used today. This is a former British colony that is located in Western Africa. The fifth highest was Congo. This is a Western African nation formerly ruled by the French. Senegal and Gambia were once combined into the former French/British colony, Senegambia. It was sixth highest in percentage of slaves brought to Virginia.

Bight of Benin, a former African slave trade port, was another area where many slaves were taken from. Other areas include Madagascar, Windward Coast, Bight of Biafra, Ivory Coast, and Angola. If you believe you are descended from an African slave, you could try doing genealogical investigation to figure out the specific area your ancestors came from. If any of your family members have already done genealogy tracing, you could ask to use their work for your family tree.

I do know that we as white people in today's society know nothing about a culture of people our ancestors made millions / billions off their hard labor. All we know is  we're scared to death of people of color and have no legitimate reason why. Our "white" history has been instilled in them and told to us in schools across America in a manor that's sweet and pretty, but it's all lies. History is only told by those that win. I knew nothing about the people of Haiti and the (3) different armed forces they defeated to gain their Freedom until the earth quake ravaged the area. It sure as hell was not in my history book when I was in high school. It's sad but many white people did not want the people of Haiti to be helped. Important Historical facts have been intentionally swept-ed under the rug to hide the dirty of Europeans, just as they hid the history of the american Indians and "Trail of Tears". This is one of the reasons america is so screwed up, we've only been taught about white history in our books of history. The bad stuff has been covered up and put on the hush list for over 300 years.

Let me see if this makes sense to you friend. People lose their jobs and homes everyday in the US, it does not mean that they then want to be exploited. These people had their daughters and wives raped, families seperated forever, and for their intire lives, were treated and forced to believe they were less than human. That is in no way a bargan out of poverty.

The conditioning process of the slaves make it hard to determine where a slave may have originated,However the moslim tribes had a very elaborate slave trade 900 years prior to the trans-atlantic market. Many of these slaves were sold to the europeans. The slaves were for a large part , a remnant of the hebrew nation dating as far back as A.D. 70. Before manditory christianization these slaves worshiped yahweh as their deity ' cum ba yah' and sang songs of deliverance such as go down moshe. As to the number of hebrews sold into the western hemisphere I`m not sure but the market that existed througout the east was vast.

That is the dumbest theory on African Slaves I've ever heard. Those people were separated from the families. Children no longer had their mothers and fathers, etc. The bottom line is that they were stolen from their land. They didn't have adequate weapons to fight them off so they were over taken by them and exploited, abused, and treated worse than dogs!!!

I am a white male by the way in case anyone is going to throw all the racial insults out there because they don’t know there history. I was married to a women in Kenya and have traveled and studied the central region of Africa for many years. People in Africa were tribal people at the time of slavery, they were a struggling continent with many different territories. The simple fact is tribes took over other tribes and sold the people they took over as slaves to the European Nations and the Americas.  Honestly every race in history has bin enslaved at one time or another just the way it was, right or wrong. Most of the people I personally know in Africa don’t have any remorse and don’t care anything about the slaves that were brought to America, in fact they have great disdain for them and still think they are ranked low on the class stature. The Central and western areas of  Africa seem to be where the largest majority of the American slaves came from. Three families of the black slave owners were from a town just outside of  Nairobi  Kenya. Yes black Africans in America owned slaves in America, Check Public records in Charleston South Carolina. New Orleans, And Alabama.

The slaves from Africa came from all corners of the continent, east west north and south. The reason why so many slaves from Africa were being sent to other countries was because African slaves were supposed to be the most efficient and hard working people. Even African female slaves were regarded the same.

Another reason as to why only African slaves were because Africa was a poor country. It was living under the poverty line and many did not have any proper food, clothing and shelter. The African people had no other choice but to become slaves and getting trade to other countries such as America, Europe, Middle East and Britain.

so your saying that if you lost your job, hadn't eaten in a week and had no place to put your hat, that you would let some slave traders do you a favor and put you into bondage?does that make any sense to you?

That is the most stupidest comment and if that is the case many other countries were in poverty and they were not slaves. And you stated they did not have proper food. Food is food that is no excuse to make someone a slave. Come on now lets use some common sense here. Slavery was a business and it made the money for many people even in ancient times. Slavery was and still is considered as power and a big business for some people.

How could you be so ignorant as to saying that Africa is a continent then you call it a country??? Africa is indeed a continent, and AFRICA IS NOT POOR!!! This is one of the most ignorant comments I have seen! We as Africans living in America wonder why some African Immigrants think we're ignorant. -_-

OK smart guy first off Africa is a continent not a country as you say. Different parts of the US and the Americas in general have differing concentrations of the original countries of the slaves. For example in North Brazil most slaves originated from Angola and central Africa, in Haiti and Louisiana its Benin, in Cuba most are Yoruba, in Virginia many are Nigerian. In the slaves came mostly from west africa in places like Sierra Leon, Senegambia, benin, ghana, nigeria, etc. And BTW super shalz, Africa was not always as poor as it is now, after the rape of colonialization. Many parts of Africa were very wealthy, developed, had large kindgdoms with palaces, armies, advanced medicine, education, politics, advanced stable agriculture, and even democracy.
