Your initials are the first letters of your each name in your full name written with a period between each. For example, if your name was John Doe, your initials would be J. D.

Depending on whether or not you use your middle name or names, the initials of your name will generally be two or three letters separated by a period. Often, initials are used to signify a middle name, while the first and last names are written fully. For example, if your name was Jane Sarah Smith, you could write it as Jane S. Smith. In other cases, an initial is used in place of a first name; in the previous example, she could write her full name as J. Smith, or J. S. Smith.

Those who are known mainly by their middle names may shorten their first names to an initial, for example the American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.

In some cases, a person may have a middle initial which does not stand for anything, for example American President Harry S. Truman.

The practice of using initials rather than full names can be used to keep anonymity. The use of an initial rather than a second name is something which can allow differentiation between people who have the same name without giving away their full identity.

Celebrities and well known people may use initials instead of full names for giving autographs, as it is a practice which saves time.

Initials are the first letters of your full name. For instance, if your name is Marvin Henry Ford, your initials would be:
M. H. F.

If your name is Albert Robert Saybrook, your initials would be A. R. S. Use a period after each letter in each case.

My middle initial does not stand for a name. It is simply a letter. I have always understood that to add a period after the middle initial signifies it stands or is short for something. A middle initial/letter WITHOUT a period following it simply alerts you that it is just a letter. Ex: Molly J Hendenick
