The easiest way for me to deal with fractions is to make them all the same. If you have 1/4 and 1/2...I would make them both in terms of quarters. So 1/2 is eqaul to 2/4. 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 which is less than one
The best method to determine which fraction is greater or less than the other is to convert them into decimals. E.g in the above case:
1/4+1/2 = 0.25+0.5=0.75 which is less than 1.
Another method can be using your common sense in the following way
You know that 1/4 is equal to 1 part of 4 whole. And 1/2 is equal to two parts of a whole. So when 1/4 is added to 1/2 it will make 3 parts which is less than 1.
