In the United States of America it will take 6 or 7 years to become a fully qualified Physical Therapist. There can be a slight difference to this as some people may finish  it a little earlier or later but as it will be a doctorate or master degree it will take a lot of work and that is the sort of timescale that should be allowed for qualifications. This will be for a basic qualification and if there is the desire to specialize is something such as sport injuries or neurology there will be the need to train further.

Being a physical therapist is a well respected hob and the people who are helped by them will be eternally grateful for the help and support they give. If there have been serious injuries incurred as the result of an accident recovery may take a long time. Once the person is stable and able to leave the hospital; they will still need a great deal of help. They may need to learn to walk again and even if it is not these drastic old skills will have to be re learned.

It is a highly competitive field and only the students with the best grades will be guaranteed the best jobs. A license will also be needed after the exams have been passed and fortunately it is a highly regulated field. The license will need to be renewed on a regular basis in order to allow the person to keep practicing. As well as having to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination it is likely that there will also be additional state examinations to be taken.

A person must complete a 4 years bachelors degree for getting into a Physical Therapy program. In good PT programs the applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.0. The applicant must also take the GRE Exam and score at least 950.

Actually it takes 2yrs to become an Assistant, but most of the credits for PTA will not count towards your PT degree. I've been told only approximately 6mos. Of courses count! I am starting a PTA program this fall and hope to one day go back for a DPT degree although I expect to basically start all over the PTA will be a great boost to my current income bracket!   Hope this helps. = )
