Hell. They worked from dawn til dusk. Most plantation were in the South, so it was very hot during the day. Some picked cotton in the fields, some tended to gardens, ext. And if you slacked off with your work or fell behind of the other slaves, you were whipped by the overseer. Some didn't get any water, so they passed out from exhaustion/dehydration.
