There are a total of nine zeros in a billion. The next natural number after the figures 999,999,999 and before 1,000,000,001 is 1,000,000,000. It is known as a billion in the American English language.

One billion or 1,000,000,000 can also be referred as milliard, although this term is hardly ever used in the English language, but is used regularly in other languages. According to the English language billion means million millions or 1,000,000,000,000, rather than American thousand million. In scientific notations, 109 are denoted as one thousand million and physical quantities can be denoted by expressing SI prefix giga.

It is true that there are 9 zeroes in a billion, but if you think a little deeper, there may be many thousands more; for example, there are 2 zeroes in 100, but there are also 11 if you include the zeroes within 10, 20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90 and 100. So, on that scale, there are thousands of zeroes in a billion. Imagining how many zeroes are within a googol ( 1 to the power of 100 ) makes noses bleed ...
