I thought the British still call something like two billion two thousand million? Which it is of course.

It depend in what area you are talking. A billion dollars is always a thousand million dollars - the financial confusion otherwise would be palpable. Until quite recently here a billion "anythings" was a million million "anythings". Popular science writers who have to "dimension" distance in space (for instance) usually explain which system they are using when publishing books in Europe and the UK.
