The journal for which you are writing may have standards they want you to follow. A serif font, such as Times New Roman, is usually appropriate.

When the text involves numbers and letters together, I like to choose a font such that the lower-case L and the 1 are distinguishable. The same goes for O (oh) and 0 (zero). The idea is to put the reader's focus on the content, not on the readability of the text.
