The Federal Polytechnic in Nekede Owerri first started in 1978 but was originally known as the College of Technology, Owerri. Its first temporary premises was established at the Government Technical College, Owerri in 1978. However in 1981, the college moved to its permanent and current location in Nekede, Owerri.
In 1987 the name of the college was officially change to The Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. Six years later the name was changed again to the Federal Government Institution and then it was renamed again to The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri.
There are three main functions of a Polytechnic that were laid out by the Federal Polytechnics Act of 1979. These functions were laid out in Section 2 of the Act.
The first function is to provide full or part time instruction and training courses in management, commerce, applied science and technology. And also other fields of applied learning that are relevant to the current development needs of Nigeria i.e. Industrial or agricultural production.
The second function is to arrange and provide study groups, seminars and conferences that are relative to the fields of learning that were mentioned in the first function.
The third and final function is to carry out the above functions stated in the way that the council determines. This is so that the objectives of a Polytechnic College are promoted.
