A fraction is only "dissimilar" in relation to another fraction. It cannot be "dissimilar" to a whole number.  A fraction is added to a whole number by either of two means. 1. Express one adjacent to the other to make a mixed number   Example: 1 + 3/4 = 1 3/4 2. Express both over a common denominator, usually the denominator of the fraction. Then add.   Example: 1 + 3/4 = 4/4 + 3/4 = 7/4
