Emmeline Pankhurst was a famous political activist who worked for the empowerment and suffrage of women in Britain. She was the leader of the British Suffragette Movement. She was born in Manchester in July 1858, into a politically active family. She was born a day after the storming of the Bastille by women and so felt connected to it from the very beginning. Her marriage to husband, Richard Pankhurst in 1878, who was a barrister working for the women's right to vote, further encouraged her to work for women's rights. She initially started working by joining Women's Franchise League but when it broke apart she unsuccessfully tried gaining entry into the Independent Labor Party, and was refused. After her husband's death in 1898, she founded the women's social And Political Union. The group soon became infamous for it's military tactics and police assaults. With time, her daughters also became the members of Women's Social and Political Union and soon resorted to arson as a commonly used pressure tactic. This also caused estrangement between her and her two daughters. In her later years she was deeply bothered by Bolshevism and joined the Conservative Party to work against it. She died in 1928 and her memory was preserved two years later in the form of a statue of hers in Victoria Tower Gardens. For more detail follow this link:en.wikipedia.org
