In Roman Britain, Women were treated less equal than the men were. In fact, Roman men were entitled to the family home and even to the life and death of the family. This remained true whether the man was 60 or 16!
It was up to the men who their daughters married, though often the women would be brave enough to have a say in the matter. The men would take their wives out to dinner parties and they also allowed them to be the hostess for any parties they held within the home.
It seems that the laws seemed harsher than what was actually practised back then. Roman women were not seen as equals according to the law but the roman men treated them a little better and allowed them to ahve their own opinions. They were allowed to even citisize the mens opinion on occasion and they seemed to have a little freedom too.
