I think make them have a sense of control, and give them a threat free environment.
How do you keep students motivated?
Try to discover what motivates them as it can be a compromise, every party benefits if they get happy whilst work productivity is increased. Some suggestions are if it's computer work let them listen to music or just get a suggestion box that encourages people to write what motivates them.
