There's always debate when it comes to literary canons, but here are some of my favorites from the land of the Stars and Stripes:

  • The Catcher in the Rye -  J.D. Salinger
  • The Big Sleep - Raymond Chandler
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S Thompson

One writer who is greatly underrated is John D.McDonald who wrote the Travis McGee series. They may only be thrillers but McDonald included a character named Meyer (no first name) who is the author's voice in the stories. They're worth reading just to get Meyer's words of wisdom.

The Little House series by Laura Ingalls  Wilder.

It may be a children's book, buy my 45year old dad and his 55 year old sister still love and read them.  And, personally, I think that it is a good series.
