A fable is a made-up story which is told for the purpose of imparting a moral or teaching people something about life. The best known examples are probably the ancient Aesop's fables. Some of these can be found on Blurtit - I remember retelling a few myself- so if you wabt examples you can type "fable" into the Blurtit search window.

A tall tale is a story which is usually presented as truth - ie, the teller claims that this really happened to him/ her - but it is so exaggerated that nobody really believes it. An example of a tall tale could be a fisherman claiming that he hooked a giant fish, only it got away...you probably wouldn't really believe him.
