A scale factor is usually written as a fraction or a ratio. Examples   1/2    (seen on engineering drawings, means the real object is 2 times the size shown on the drawing)   1:62500    (seen on maps, means the real distance is 62500 times the distance shown on the map. This scale is within 1.5% of 1 inch:1 mile.)
