APA format is introduced by American psychological Association(APA). Here are their abreviation guidelines    - Use s for second, m for meter.  -e.g. [use for example]    - etc. [use and so forth]    - i.e. [use that is]      - viz. [use namely]      - vs. [use versus]    - Do use "pp." for citations of encyclopedia entries    -To form plurals of abbreviations, add s alone, without apostrophe (PhDs, IQs, vols., Eds).    - Use two-letter postal codes for U.S. State names.      For more information , visit >>> www.psychwww.com

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), abbreviations are best used only when they allow for clear communication with the audience. APA also allows abbreviations that appear as words in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary to be used without explanation (IQ, REM, AIDS, HIV).

In APA, abbreviations should be limited to instances when a) the abbreviation is standard and will not interfere with the reader’s understanding and b) if space and repetition can be greatly avoided through abbreviation.
