When reading aloud you concentrate more on pronunciation, think more about the effects of words, eg you will stress certain words and put expression in your voice - you interpret the text, really. Silent reading is more passive - you let the text have its effect on you wihout you trying to interpret it. It may also work on your imagination more as you are concentrating solely on the words.
