There is no proper amount so it's all up to you on how much you want to spend. Sometimes it also depends on who the 8th grader is in this situation that could help you determine the amount you want to spend on the gift. But I don't think that it should be too expensive because they're just graduating out of middle school but if you want to make a big deal out of it, then go for it.
