To work out the top number (numerator) of the improper fraction multiply the whole number 2 by the bottom fraction number (denominator), and then add the original numerator (top number). I.e. 2 x 12 = 24 + 1 = 25 25 is now your new numerator (top number) and the denominator stays the same i.e. 12 Hence 25/12
