An improper fraction would be one like 17/3. It has a bigger number in the numerator (top) than in the denominator (bottom). A mixed number would be one like 5 2/3. It is the same amount as 17/3 but it is written with a whole number and a proper fraction. I hope this helps and that I didnt confuse you more ( :
The difference is that in an improper fraction, the numerator is greater than the denominator, which is why it is called improper, and in a mixed number, there is a whole number and a regular fraction.
Example for an improper fraction: 16 over 3.
Example for mixed number: 4 (whole number) and 3 over 4
example for regular fraction: 4 over 5.
