To convert a mixed number e.g. 4 8/9 to an improper fraction,
1. Take the whole number (4).
2. Multiply that by the denominator (9). (4 X 9 = 36)
3. Add this number to the numerator (8). (36 + 8 = 44)
The improper fraction will be: 44/9 (44 is the number you got from Step 3, 9 is the denominator.)

You may need to simplify the fraction. (44/9 cannot be simplified.)
To simplify 22/8, just divide the numerator (22) and denominator (8) by whole numbers.
22 and 8 can both be divided by 2, so divide both of them by 2 to get 11/4.
11/4 cannot be simplified any further as both numbers cannot be divided by any other whole number.
(For your information 22/8 = 11/4)
