In citing articles to be used in an essay, there is not much argument whether the said article be italicized or underlined. Using any of the two is acceptable in the MLA format, provided that the guidelines are not violated. Consistency is key in either having the article in italics or underlined.

The Modern Language Association (MLA) is generally used in citing quotations and articles of modern literary works available. It is an intricate presentation of how literature be arranged, in such a way, that the guidelines followed provide a clear representation and concise outlining of the literatures used.

Using the MLA, provides the writer a chance to duly recognize the works of those the manuscript or essay is based on. This MLA format is essential in protecting the writer himself from taking credit of work done by other writers, in turn, preventing allegations of plagiarism in the future. In following the guidelines of the MLA provides an assurance to avoid unintended or inadvertent use of the literary works of other writers, hence, safeguarding the aptness and appropriateness of your own literary work.

To have a better understanding of the MLA format, general guidelines are as follows:

• Standard 8.5" x 11" paper
• Legible font type
• Double-spaced, one space per period or any punctuation mark
• 1 inch margin on all sides
• Indention of the first line of every paragraph must be half an inch from the left margin. (using the tab key is acceptable)
• Headers that number each page consecutively should be placed at the upper right-hand corner of each page, a half an inch from the top margin.

The MLA format is widely accepted and commonly practiced in the different literary works including manuscripts and research papers. Though it is a must that the different guidelines above should be followed, remember that it is the instructor's guidelines that should always take precedence in any literary work accomplished.
