4(9-7)

When you have parentheses in an algebraic expression, you almost always use the distributive property to eliminate them. Multiply the outside number (4) by the two inside numbers. The sign (-) in the parentheses stays the same (unless the outer and inner numbers are negative)

4*9=36 and 4*7=28

So you're left with 36-28 which is 8:)
