A return to the basics would be nice.

Sir Humphrey Applebee, speaking of the British education system, said, "Our children are socially aware, personally well adjusted, but they can't read, write or do sums."

Nice quote.
Here they spend so much time on standardized tests, they're losing a lot. One of our educators said, "You can weigh a piglet over and over, but it won't get any fatter. Eventually you weaken it by pulling it from the teat."

Interesting quote yourself.
Sir Humphrey was the Cabinet Secretary in the series, "Yes Prime Minister".

How about household basics. Sure, Algebra and Calculus are good to learn, but they don't really prepare you for the average lifestyle. I suggest lessons such as how to do your taxes, how to prepare for and get a morgage/car loan/general loan, managing your credit, how to budget, etc.

Economics/household skills would be nice. Yes, the parents have some responsibility to teach their kids these things, but we know all parents aren't going to do it. In that case, it might be nice if the school covers some basic life skills.

Dear Happy,

For the sake of us all as citizens of a changing world, I would like to see history brought back...was NCLB where it got left behind?

i remember being home with childhood mumps and reading the WHOLE Third Grade history textbook. And now sixty-some years on I am still at it, the attempt to put two-and-two together as to what makes us tick.

Basic reasoning. I have a few teachers in my family and two are high school teachers. Most of the students don't understand basic reasoning.

Basic skills that used to be part of the curriculum like phonics, reading, writing, math. There seems to be more concentration on social skills and less on academic.

There seems to be far too many graduating high school that are still primarily  illiterate, and ill prepared for how the real world works .

I've personally seen a few kids I worry will have a hard time without these skills.

Exactly .. Seems far too many don't even have the ability to do simple math (without the use of a calculator) and are completely lost when challenged with simple tasks like grocery shopping on a budget.
