A bibliography is an acknowledgement of the sources that were used to create or publish a piece of work. This could be in the form of books, journals, Cd-roms, videos etc. A bibliography is very important from a legal perspective because somebody could pass off someone else's work as his own. This is where a bibliography comes handy which ensures credit is given where it is due.

The MLA (Modern Language Association) style of writing is the most common form of writing citations or bibliographies. Any bibliography should contain the author's name, title of the piece, page number of the page that has been referred to, publisher, place of publication and date of publication. Bibliographies are generally in alphabetical order. Bibliography formats will differ when it pertains to videos, websites and other forms of media. There are times when the sources end up being more important than the primary piece.

A format to write a bibliography could be different for different publications. In case you are writing for a book, then you need to Name of author/s (surname, first names), year of publication, Title, publisher, place of publication. In case you are writing Encyclopaedia Articles you will first need to 'Title of article', Title year of publication, edition, publisher, place of publication, vol. no. and page no/s. A magazine article also holds the same format as encyclopaedia articles.
Some important points to be remembered are in case there are 3 or more authors, they should be mentioned in the way they appear on every page. In case you are unaware of the publisher and the place of publication, then simply mention n.pub., n.p. do not publish any kind of email address until you have full permission from the authority.

Bibliography in simple words basically is the learning and description of books. It usually is distributed into enumerative or systematic bibliography, which results in a general idea of publications in an exact category, and analytical or critical bibliography, which revises the creation of books.

When typing a Bibliography always make sure that the books are written down according to alphabetic order. Make sure you underline each and every book title and give special importance to spacing, capitalisation and punctuation. When there is more than one publication location on the front page, always remember, that the first city should be the one which should be noted in your bibliography.

Make sure that the information for your bibliography should come from the title page of every book, and the cover or other sources.
