There are two types of school leaving certificate. The first is an exam which can be used as an alternative to GCSE. After passing this exam, a certificate is gained reflecting the candidate's ability to cope in the adult world, not of academic ability alone. This certificate is taken at the age of 14, at an important mile stone in life where children are becoming young adults. Once this certificate is achieved, the young person would gain a level of freedom to pursue a career or education of their choice, be it creative, vocational or academic. The idea of a school leaving certificate is supported by Gerard Kelly, who believes that until GCSEs are stopped, the school curriculum will lack coherence. In order to pass this exam, a student would have to have a certain level of maturity to be able to cope and adapt to situations in an adult fashion.
A second type of school leaving certificate is one which requests leave from school for a certain period of time. An application requesting leave of this kind needs to be in a requesting manner. The head teacher needs to know the various reasons for your absence, and the severity of your reasons. Your application must be very specific, including times and dates wherever possible. Even though at times, you may feel that your privacy is being encroached upon, the head teacher needs to know why the absence is being taken. It needs to be written in a formal style without spelling or grammatical errors.
