There were a number of people who contributed in the development of physical education. For example, it can be started by a person who first gave the concept of physical exercise. Johann Bernhard Basedow in 1723 to 1790 focused on the importance of physical education. He was the first American physical education teacher. Then Diocletian Lewis in 1823 to 1866 promoted it. It was first started in California as a mandate education in the year 1866. In those days it was recognized as an official education in America and then in the next thirty years it was also extended to a number of countries.
Physical education in modern times
Objective of PE
It is the objective of physical education to contribute to physical, social, emotional and mental development through participation in a variety of physical activities. The program is organized so that each student has the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor and indoor sports. The freshmen participate in a core (required) program. Sophomores, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to elect their activities. This core curriculum and electives include individual and team sports, gymnastics and tumbling, dance, aquatics, first aid and C.P.R., fitness activities, fitness testing, and self-improvement activities.
Adapted physical education is also offered during the day, on an as needed basis.
Skill progression is provided for by scheduling students in basic levels before enrolling in advanced classes.
In addition to the curricular offerings, students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities including intramural and interscholastic athletics.
