English is the third most commonly spoken first language after Mandarin and Spanish. Although this is the case, English is the most popularly spoken second or third language in the world.
The countries with the highest numbers of second language English speakers are India, Nigeria and the Philippines.
Countries in northern Europe also speak English fluently; and Germany, Sweden Norway and the Netherlands all have over 50 per cent of citizens that are fluent in English, making the language extremely popular amongst other nations.
The reasoning for this may be the American and British film and music industries. They produce films and music that is showcased across the globe and this also heightens the need to be able to understand the English language.
It is seen as a world language as it is spoken in so many different countries and is spoken at the Olympic Committee and the UN meetings.
There are differences in the dialect spoken in the English language worldwide. There are dialects in England the USA and in all different countries it the world. These are due to area and often include slang. Although this is the case, this happens with all languages all across the globe and dialect is not strictly an English language barrier issue.
