According to Julius Nyerere, adult education has two functions. The first function is that adult education should act as an inspiration for adults to changes themselves, and also help them to understand that it is possible to change themselves. The second function of adult education is to aid people in making their own decisions; as well as helping them to implement those decisions for their own benefits.

  • Julius Nyerere
Julius Nyerere, full name Julius Kambarage Nyerere, was born on 13th April 1922 and died on 14th October 1999. He was a Tanzanian politician who rose to power as the first President of Tanzania. Previously he was the President of Tanganyika when the country was founded in 1961.

According to Julius Nyerere's two functions of adult education, it should be very easy for adults to seek the education that they need or desire. Adult education can get adults the skills that they need to succeed in their communities, at home and at work. Below are some tips on how to find some basic adult education.

  • Contact your local Department of Education
The first step to take when it comes to finding adult education classes is to contact the Department of Education for the state that you live in. They will be able to tell you how to enroll on basic courses. They will redirect you to your local community college and you will also be able to enroll over the phone, however you might need to wait a while before you can actually attend.

  • Start with the basics
Before you start to take any complex classes, the first ones that you should take are basic Mathematics, Science and English. Or you may be able to find classes in basic Reading and Writing skills. The examinations that you take will depend entirely on the age group of the class that you enroll in.
