8x -2 -5x =8    (your equation)
8x -5x -2 = 8    (rearrange to put x terms together)
x(8 -5) -2 = 8    (factor out x)
3x -2 = 8    (do the arithmetic to find the coefficient of x)
3x -2 +2 = 8 +2    (add 2 to both sides of the equation)
3x = 10
x = 10/3    (divide both sides of the equation by 3)

Check
8(10/3) - 2 - 5(10/3) = 8
80/3 - 2 - 50/3 = 8
80/3 - 6/3 - 50/3 = 8
74/3 - 50/3 = 8
24/3 = 8    (yes)

1) eliminate parentheses - you have none
2) combine like terms - the x's
3) eliminate constant - +,-
4) eliminate coefficient - *, /

8x-2-5x=8 it says subtract 5x from 8x. You're left with 3x

3x-2=8 add 2 to 8 since it's -2
3x=10
X=3.333333333 ..... Or 3 1/3 :)

Hi,

To solve equation arrange x terms and integers.
8x - 2 - 5x = 8
= > 8x - 5x = 8 + 2
= > 3x = 10
= > x = 10/3 or 3^(1/3)
