The University of Ghana is the largest of the 13 universities in Ghana. It was founded in 1948 under the title 'University College of the Gold Coast' and originally existed as an affiliate college of the University of London, which supervised its courses and awarded degrees. It was established on the recommendation of the Asquith Commission, which was set up in 1943 to investigate Higher Education in the then British colonies.

It gained full university status in 1961 and currently has around 42,000 students.
The main campus of the university is based at Legon, which is approximately 12 km north east of the capital city of Accra. The chairman of the university is Anthony Oteng-Ghazi and the current Chancellor is the former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The two main colleges of the university are its College of Health Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences.

The College of Health Sciences consists of a number of faculties, schools and research institutes. They are the Medical School, Dental School, School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Public Health and the Medical Research Institute.

The College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences consists of 7 departments and 3 agricultural research stations - in Kade, Kpong and Nungua.

Aside from these two colleges, other faculties are:

• Faculty of Engineering Sciences

The University of Ghana is a partner member of the African Institute of Science and Technology and is also part of the Consortium of Academic Stewards for The Scholar Ship.
