The best university which offers a course in photography in the United Kingdom is the Winchester School of Art, which is one of the departments of the University of Southampton. It is located in the city of Southampton in the county of Hampshire in the region of southeast England. The degree offered by the University of Southampton is called a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours (which is abbreviated as Hons.) on Graphic Design and Photography.

The University of Southampton's Winchester School of Art is one of the few institutions which is reputed all over the world for conducting its course through practical workshops. The students of the photography program work alongside their counterparts in such related disciplines as graphic design, advertising design, fashion, fine art and textile design. The course focuses on black and white processing and printing, digital photography, digital image manipulation and camera use, art direction and studio photography and lighting.

Glasgow school of art has an amazing photography course, although notoriously hard to get in to. It has great equipment that is lent out like a library, and technical workshops in film and digital. Also the "Art school" lifestyle is great and the halls literally one minute walk away from the fabulous mackintosh building.

Falmouth seems pretty good, I think that the london arts unis such as LCC are really not as good as their reputation.

If one wants to become a photographer on can simply go ahead and do it with the right equipment, but it is quite tough to get clients. For several branches of photography, no formal educational background is necessary; if one's work is of good quality then one can market it till one gets a break.

However, one should undertake a suitable course, if possible to the college graduate level. That does not mean you do not practise your photography skills until you finish the course though.

To find the right school for you, you need to do a lot of home work. Find out about the courses offered in various institutions, and then compare them and select the one that most suits your requirements. Large schools offer better quality equipment while personalised treatment is assured in smaller schools. You have to see what is on the top of your priority list and make a decision accordingly.
