Knowledge and intelligence are quite different things, but there are techniques to improve the way your brain works and how your memory retains information.
If you are trying to increase your knowledge of something in particular, then you need to study that subject, read books, go on a course and learn from experts in the field. If it is more general knowledge you are after then keep your reading varied, but make sure to read as much as possible; preferably challenging books rather than tabloid newspapers!
Limit your exposure to anything that is not expanding your mind, any soap operas or celebrity filled magazines. You can try crosswords and puzzles to keep your brain more active but probably better is learning how to do new things. Having curiosity about things will help you want to learn and find out more.
There are studies that link aerobic exercise in particular to memory retention and concentration, you can use yoga and meditation as well to give yourself space to reflect. Sleeping plenty will allow you to wake up more invigorated and productive.
Eating a healthy diet is helpful, incorporating oily fish is good because Omega 3 Fatty Acids have been shown to aid memory. You could try herbs such as ginseng root, ginkgo biloba or gotu kola, while taking good vitamins and eating garlic will also be beneficial.
Of course, all of these things take in a particular view of 'intelligence' and there are many computer programmers for example who would be deemed very intelligent, but do not do all of the above. Having an open and receptive mind is very important because it enables you to question things as they happen and if you do this then you can research and deepen your knowledge as you go, and it will become second nature.
