As well as providing much needed exercise and physical development, physical education can lead towards to development of a number of social traits. These are described in the bullet points below. Due to the variety of benefits it provides, in most countries physical education is compulsory up until the later high school years. In Poland, even undergraduates studying for a degree at university must particulate in regular physical education classes. Physical education can be an essential building block in the education of a school age child.

  • Communication skills
Physical education classes provide an environment in which communication skills can be developed. Communication is vital in team sports, and physical education can be seen as an alternative method of encouraging the development of good communication skills. Those who tend to be more reserved may be more likely to communicate in sports, as it is a natural part of the game.
  • Dealing with competition
Often, there will be an element of competition in physical education, when students compete against each other in a range of sports. This can help them develop a healthy competitive trait that will help them progress in physical education as well as other academic areas. Students are encouraged to celebrate victories and accept defeat in the appropriate manner.
  • Teamwork skills
As many sports involve the establishment of a team, students can learn to work alongside their fellow classmates in physical education. In this way they can learn about working as part of a team, and how this involves contributing but not being too dominant. Students can also develop friendships in this way. Sportsmanship often helps students who once did not like each other put aside their differences and get along, namely because they have the joint goal of securing a victory for their team.
